Straight From the Horses Mouth

The board wants to thank everyone for their support with the team so far this quarter! Everyone has been doing a fantastic job at the fundraisers and the work everyone did at the barn cleaning was great! Make sure to get involved with the committees if you want your voice heard! The next show we will be together as a whole team, so get excited and keep up the team spirit!

Dear UC Team Members,

First I would like to say what a wonderful team I have this year! I have really enjoyed getting to know all the new team members. The best thing about my job is the great membership I have to work with! The Western and Hunt teams are both complete this year and full of talent. I am really looking forward to the upcoming show at Morehead University.

The barn-cleaning day was fantastic this year. We stained all the stall doors and walls and Carolyn Rydyznski! Now we all know that Liniment removes stain! The team collected and burned brush from the pastures, swept the back porch and hosed the indoor arena. Alyssa, one of our alumni, used her artistic skills to finish the new jumps I bought you. The team now has 2 UC fences. Very cool. Everything you worked on looks great!

The first day of the barn cleaning was especially hard due to the hip problems Roxy Fagan was having. Thank you to all who helped with her. The members who helped should be very proud that we were able to give her every opportunity, and kept her as comfortable as possible on her last day. A very special thank you to Caitlyn Williamson, Leslie Gilb and Carolyn Rydyznski, for staying very late to help with this great brood mare.

Lastly I would like to mention your leadership. I am very impressed with the amount of effort your leaders are putting forth. Every year I spend countless hours with the board, and this year is no exception. Kristina and Meaghan do an amazing job keeping up with me on the points and paperwork that always seems to be due. Leslie is Johnny on the spot with any request at any time. Hanna has done a great job keeping me informed and putting together this newsletter. Lauren was amazing with tryouts this year! It ran very smoothly she really kept the work off my shoulders! Lauren and the board have been working on our up coming horse show. There are more members working hard and accomplishing a lot as well, but these are the girls who assist me and do it extremely well. Please remember to thank your board members, they are working hard and sometimes leadership can be a thankless job.

Best Wishes,

MissyJo

Barn Happenings

SLEC welcomed a new lesson horse. Claudia is a gentle but energetic dark bay thoroughbred mare who has a smooth gait.

Missy Jo has generously given us another locker to use for this season. It is located to the right of our current locker. Just a reminder to return tack and anything else you might borrow back to the locker. It is also expected of our team to keep it nice and organized, so please do your part.

Parents Column

Parents, family members, and friends, you are our lifeline. Your support is always greatly appreciated!

We would like to personally invite you to attend all of our shows. Warm layers, folding chairs, and a smile is all you need. The only thing we ask is that you mind noise levels, to avoid spooking horses, and that you do not talk to or distract competitors while they are in the show ring or with our coach.

Mark your calendars for February 27th and 28th. We will be hosting a western show at Lakeside Arena in Frankfort Arena. All show members are required to attend and we can use all the help we can get. Please contact us if you are willing to help.

UCET wants to thank all parents who provide food at our shows! You make our day very full... and our stomachs too.

If you are interested in contributing to the team in any way please email the board at ucequestrianteam@gmail.com!

If you know of anyone that would like to receive Equestrian Bits, please send their email address to Hanna at eckhofhc@mail.uc.edu

Good luck to all those trying out on the 21st! We’re excited to meet you!!!!!!

Team Member for Homecoming Queen!

Vote Kylee Headland for Homecoming Queen!

She is a member of our hunt seat team, a junior in the College of Engineering, and has an intensely infectious laugh :)

http://www.uc.edu/homecoming/King_Queen/candidates/headland_kylee.html

Team Member Crowned: Kentucky Quarter Horse Association Queen

Congratulation Cecilla Purtee! Ceci is on her way to compete in the All-American Quarter Horse Congress Queens Contest on October 17th and 18th. She will compete against other recognized Quarter Horse Association Queens to gain the title of 2009 All-American Quarter Horse Congress Queen. All contestants will be judged on an oral interview, written test, and horsemanship. A letter from the Queen:

My name is Ceci Purtee and I am the 2009 Kentucky Quarter Horse Association Queen. I have been an avid horse enthusiast from the womb. I grew up loving horses and was given the chance to ride as a youth for my county 4-H group when I was 8 years old. During these years I bought my first horse, a Quarter Horse. I fell in love with the breed and became a member of youth teams to compete at Congress in the NYATT competition. Within 4-H I became Ohio State Fair Senior Individual and Champion in 2004. I also won the prestigious award of Showman of Showmen at my county fair in 2006.

I have owned two quarter horses and plan on owning many more in the future. A few years ago I graduated as Salutatorian of Portsmouth High School. I am now a junior at the University of Cincinnati working toward a bachelor degree in neurobiology. I plan to become a Neurosurgical Radiologic Interventionist once I have finished. I am currently employed by the University of Cincinnati Hospital in the Department of Neurosurgery Clinical Trials, and also work as a Resident Advisor for the University Park Apartments. I love to sing and am a vocal soloist. I have held lead roles in school musicals and have performed in the Southern Ohio Light Opera. In addition, I often love to sing at my church.

I am on the UC Equestrian Team and have learned more about horses than I even thought possible. I have become involved in the "foal watching" process at my coach's barn where I was able to experience multiple extraordinary births as well as the whole cycle of Quarter Horse reproduction. I grew up as a city girl and therefore had a deep appreciation for the individuals who embraced my interest in horses. It has been their generosity and time invested that has taught me lessons beyond the skill of riding a horse. Thanks to all who are helping me reach my ultimate goal of becoming the 2009 Congress Queen!
