FAQ's

Q. Do I need to own a horse to be on the team?
A. No, The University that is putting on the show supplies the horses. During practice times our coach provides the horses.

Q. Do I have to have any experience?
A. No, IHSA is set up so that riders of all levels can compete. Therefore no experience is necessary. UCET takes all levels of riders: from beginners to advanced.

Q. Does it take up a lot of time?
A. It's all in what you make it, UCET can either take up a good portion of time or very little. We practice once a week for an hour, we meet twice a month for team meetings, and we will show 10-12 times. Shows take place from September to April and typically take up the entire weekend. Schedules can be worked around and not all members show or participate within optional events.

Q. Do I need to be a full-time student?
A. Any student at UC may join the UC Equestrian Team. However, IHSA states that only full-time undergraduate students may participate in the competitions. Both the IHSA and UCET check your student status.

Q. How much does it cost?
A. Team dues are $375 for first time members and $300 for returning members (quarterly). This includes once a week lessons with our coach, IHSA registration fees, show transportation for competing members, and hotel accommodations for competing members. There is also a cost of $25.00 per class at IHSA shows for competing members. This amount varies depending on skill and desire.

Q. Where are the facilities located?
A. Saddle Lake Equestrian Center where the private and/or group lessons take place is in Alexandria, KY, about 25 min south of main campus. Competitions take place at multiple facilities throughout Kentucky and Ohio; transportation is provided to and from horse shows for those that are showing.

Q. Who do I need to contact to find out more information or to join?

Q. What about show outfits?
A. Our coach will take the time to correctly outfit you; she will determine what is appropriate for you to wear during competitions. Show Tack is located at Saddle Lake Equestrian Center, our home facility. They carry a full range of attire and can order anything you need.

Q. What do I need to bring to lessons?
A. You need to provide your own SEI certified riding helmet and suitable clothing (long pants and closed toed boots). Our coach provides the team with horses and appropriate tack; some members choose to use their own saddles.

Q. Can I ride with the team before I am enrolled in classes?
A. YES! Missy Jo has a full service training facility, not only does UC ride at Saddle Lake Equestrian Center. You can request a lesson or several. Contact Missy Jo for details: me@missyjo.com.

Q. Are scholarships available so that I can be on the team?
A. Unfortunately not at this time. However, you can get sponsors. In 2008 UCET put together a sponsorship program. Your dues and show fees can be covered, contact the Public Relations / Sponsorship Chair.
