Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Do I need to own my own horse to be on the team?
A. No, The University that is putting on the show supplies the horses. and during lessons and practice times we ride the coache's horses.
Q. Does it take up a lot of time?
A. No, the equestrian team does not take a lot of time. The shows only take up 4 weekends a year per discipline and while we do require one lesson a week we work around school and personal scheduals to find a time that works for both you and the coach.
Q. Do I need to be a full-time student?
A. Any student may join the UC Equestrian Team. However IHSA requires that only full-time undergraduate students may participate in the competitions.
Q. How much does it cost?
A. IHSA membership fee is $30.00 per discipline or $40.00 for both. U.C.E.T. has a requirement of $175, per quarter to be on the team. This includes once a week lessons with our coach, Missy Jo. There is also a cost of $25.00 per class per show, for most riders this comes to fifty for the show, but if you show in mulitiple diciplines or classes it may be more.
Q. Where are the facilities located?
A. Saddle Lake Equestrian Center where the private and/or group lessons take place is in Alexandria, KY, about 25 min south of campus. Competitions take place at multiple facilities throughout Kentucky and Ohio, transportation is provided to and from horse shows.

Q. Do I have to have any experience?
A. IHSA is set up so that riders of all levels can compete. Therefore no experience is necessary.
Q. What aobut Outfits?
A. Our coach will take the time to correctly outfit you for competitions. JL horseman supply is located at our home Saddle Lake Equestrian Center, our home facility. They carry a full range of attire and can order anything custom that you need.
